Attended Northwestern University on a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship.  Commissioned Ensign, USN, in June 1959.  Joined the USS Floyd B. Parks (DD884) in Hong Kong in July 1959.

During tenure on the Parks served as Deck Division Officer, 1st Lieutenant and Gunnery Officer and in a number of collateral assignments.  Completed three Westpac deployments.  Participated in the great bicycle robbery of 1960.  Discharged as Lieutenant (jg), USNR, in August 1962.
